A fascinating article published in Smithsonian Magazine on what killed the crew of the HL Hunley, and then led to its sinking, during the WBS. It was written by Rachel Vance, and is a highly compressed version of her new book (scheduled for publication on April 7), In the Waves: My Quest to Solve the Mystery of a Civil War Submarine.
Love the picture..... I want to be beamed up and leave this virus infested world.
Who knows what problems they have there on that flying disc. At least it might be different and so offer a little more mental stimulation than these apartment walls do right now..
It looks like the Wretch'n Gretchin is aiming to help the purveyors of leftists agitporp with her latest executive order. Of course you were safe shopping without a mask during the peak of the outbreak, now, when conditions (and the weather) are improving and "for your own safety", you need must wear a mask.
As a Michigan update a State Senate Committe is debating a bill to revoke the Governor's executive authority to issue a declaration of emergency "".... and to prescribe the powers and duties of the governor with respect thereto; and to prescribe penalties,"

Trump Will Force 1,000 Cadets Back for Graduation
“For President Trump, who adores the pomp and precision of military ceremonies, this was the year he would finally get one of the special perks of being president — delivering the commencement address at West Point, the only service academy where he has not spoken,” the New York Times reports.
“But the graduation was postponed because of the coronavirus, the cadets were sent home and officials at the school were not sure when it would be held or even whether it was a good idea to hold it.”
But Trump abruptly announced that he would, in fact, be speaking at West Point.
“That was news to everyone, including officials at West Point, according to three people involved with or briefed on the event. The academy had been looking at the option of a delayed presidential commencement in June, but had yet to complete any plans. With Mr. Trump’s pre-emptive statement, they are now summoning 1,000 cadets scattered across the county to return to campus in New York, the state that is the center of the outbreak.”
Some unconfirmed reports are saying that many of the Saudi-backed pro-Hadi forces in Yemen have not been paid in six months. Which has led to desertions, and some even selling Saudi supplied weapons to the Houthis.
Hey Fred, a fellow Michigander here. I emailed by republican state senator this week, Tom Barrett, and asked him why they are wasting time with this. They don't have the votes to override her veto and repeal of the 1945 law is unnecessary anyway. The 1976 law amended the 1945 law by placing a time limit on the emergency declaration without legislature approval. This is what they should be invoking. It seems like they want to appear to be doing something without actually doing anything.
Taliban released a propaganda video aimed at a Shiite audience, featuring a Shiite Hazara commander offering his praises to the Prophet, his Family, and his Companions(!) https://twitter.com/SimNasr/status/1252968677441507330
I think Barrett knows it will get vetoed. His bill doesn't effect the timelimit, it eliminates the authority to declare an emergency altogther, mooting a time limit. The politics of the state are going to undergo some rapid changes this year as the governor's showing great ineptitude in handling things. I don't know who is adviser her but he political career is coming to an end after this term and I don't see a cushy university job in the futre for her like Granholm managed when she left office.
I have full confidence Trump will ride his trusty Black Swan to a rightfully earned 2020 victory, but right now he is facing enemies on all sides:
1. He responded to the "corona" thing too early and killed our economy
2. He responded to the "corona" thing too late and dead bodies are piling up
3. The "corona" thing was a hoax and he should not have responded at all
4. He unlocks our economy and every new "corona death has his name on it.
Teflon Trump always gets us past these slings and arrows all pointed his way. Bravo. Mr Trump. You are teaching us the art of the deal in this very messy game called US politics.
The deep state is diabolical. Who knew until how how deep they would dig.
The Charge of the Light Brigade
BY ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON
I
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
II
“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
III
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.
IV
Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.
V
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.
VI
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!
San Diego begins a mandatory mask thing May 1st. Odd. If it's necessary, why wait until May?
If a person has had the Wuhan virus illness and recovered, as a result has antibodies and therefor cannot contract the illness and (obviously) cannot spread it, what useful purpose is served by requiring that person to wear a face mask?
But no, person who have recovered from the illness are not exempt from the law requiring the wearing of a face mask.
They were not required when the danger was so great, said the experts, that we had to shut down the economy. Now they are mandatory, just in time to provide antifa-agitprop groups cover when actual citizens are peacably protesting the unconstitutional conduct of their legislators. I sure hope nobody in the press notices or they'll have to send in some 'right wing extremists' with some KKK uniforms and nazi flags to make everyone protesting collectively guilty and thus discredit the social discontent being engendered by the Democratic party's destruction of the American dream.
A couple of ER docs from Kern county CA talk about how the data on CV19 contrasts with the models. They make some valid points about quarantine and infection rates vs death rates. Seems that a lot of people have had it, the ones that have tested positive have a 92 per cent survival rate with little or no lasting effects, and almost all of the fatalities have had co-morbidity (COPD, cancer, heart/vascular disease, AIDS and so on).
Their major points are that you quarantine sick people, not the general population, you keep your immune systems powered up by being out among the germs, and lots of people have had it, and percentage wise, not that many people died. They do come out and say that the current situation with the "lock downs" are about something besides the sciense, but did not what discuss what that something is.
I an sick unto death of this "for your safety" double speak garbage. I think I had H1N1 about 10 years ago, (didn't get tested). I had dengue 4 years ago. Both times the world kept going 'round, no matter how sick I was.
Washington State had/has a zero traffic fatality goal, which seems as dumb as this "lock down" stuff. People die. People will die of, or with cars as long as there are cars. I'm starting to wonder when boats are going to outlawed. Bathrooms will be next.

Effective on April 26, 2020 at 11:59 pm:
"Any individual able to medically tolerate a face covering must wear a covering over his or her nose and mouth—such as a homemade mask, scarf, bandana, or handkerchief—when in any enclosed public space."

such as a homemade mask, scarf, bandana, or handkerchief...
scarf is fine, as far as I am concerned. Bandana? That would work? Not that I own one. It is big enough to cover both mouth and nose? Hankerchief? ...
Posted by: Vig | 24 April 2020 at 05:50 PM
Vig,
None of them work. The virus is on the surface of the items you purchased and brought into your home. And it's on the mask, scarf, bandana.
