The implication of your jeremiad seems to be that the end is likely in the near future. Any plans for personal survivsal?

"climate specific politics"

You left out nations in Africa, South America and Asia.

"reduce our societal emphasis on profit, ideally back to the level it was in during the 50-70s"

I believe you left out Africa, South America and Asia.

"Essentially, society should incentivise different behaviour then it does right now."
How did that work out in Africa, South America and Asia before multiple countires decided to adopt, or abandon, economic incentives like profit? Zimbabwe, Cuba, Venezuala, how are they doing? How's the climate in Beijing? I bet three of the four are fine examples of zero emissions policies working just like we can expect. I wonder which one is a polluter not being held accountable by Western academics or the UN.

China also gave itself "climate goals" in the Paris accord framework.

Their stated goal is: "Achieve the peaking of CO2 emissions around 2030 and making best efforts to peak early; 60% to 65% reduction of CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by 2030 compared to 2005 level"

Go figure...

you forgot the real kicker:

"Nikki Henderson, 26, flew to the US from Britain to sail 48-foot catamaran the La Vagabonde. The vessel is carrying Miss Thunberg and her father Svante 3,000 miles to Portugal where she will go onto attend the COP 25 climate change talks in Madrid. The journey was meant to save approximately two or three tons of carbon dioxide emissions. But Ms Henderson's flight from Britain to the US likely produced the same amount of emissions the journey hoped to save, countering Ms Thunberg's mission, The Times reports."

As I said before, they are all a bunch of hypocrites.

Thanks for this. Having taught many a fifteen-year-old-girl, I was laughing pretty hard.

I do remember my grandmother, my mother's mother, kept a wash board in her front closet. She would often take it out as we came to visit. She wanted us to know how good we had it. She had three babies in diapers at one time and had to wash them using that wash board.

By the time we were young, she actually had an old electric wringer washer. My father finally bought my mom a new top loader to replace her front loader (now we're back to front loaders); so he took mom's front loader to her as a replacement.

Luckily, I knew some of the hardships my grandparents and great-grandparents had faced. They were proud of having faced them and felt more than lucky to finally be in America where the living was easier.

As far as I can tell, my generation is now quite relieved that we did not have to end up eating only Soylent Green because that would have been the only food available due to massive overpopulation that would mean no room to grow anything.

Suffragetes and prohibitionists had some success with that type of tactic. I’d propose that the most effective way for the kids to defeat their parents would be to do just that.

In the end, the kid still wins.

My survival plan is to keep going to work to keep the fossil fuels flowing through me and my family. Thank you for the great word “jeremiad.” It’s my view of our predicament.
