Pat, I thought about JP2 too, when I read Stephanie's comment above, JP2 forced a decision on Benedict how he should handle matters.

Bullies are cowards. They have great flaws and want to coerce others into believing those flaws don't matter, that they do not count. Their desire is to subjugate others.

But being a bully is a confession of moral cowardice. Trump clearly lacks guts.

Yes, your encounter is definitely preferable. Cushing seems an odd duck, but lots of Bostonians, both lay and clergy I have met, loved him.

As Dolan is to New York City, Cushing was to Boston. They are products of their upbringing and environment. Chris Matthews remarked that Dolan's New York performance at MSG was remarkable. Francis had what was clearly an amused little talk with his secretary just afterward. pl

I went to Philadelphia yesterday and saw Pope Francis go by. I’m not sure why I went. Maybe it had something to do with this Pope. Or maybe it was because of thoughts of my dear grandmother (my Nanny, deceased). She hoped I would be a priest. As it turned out I doubt the existence of a God. Anyway, it was uplifting to be among the crowd that was there.
As far as Mr. Trump, and the other candidates, I read this: http://souloftheeast.org/2014/07/11/on-power-and-death/ a while ago and I wonder if we could ever get to vote for someone who has the qualities that Ivan Aleksandrovich Ilyin describes. I hope. Peace be with all of you.

The existence of a Prime Mover was established, with metaphysical certainty, by Aristotle.

I suspect you doubt that God cares about the fates of human beings?

All

One of the sad things I have observed concerning Catholic prelates is their self aware status as a governing class. This manifests itself in narcissistic politicking when they flock together. This was evident to me in the many Memorial Day services I attended as a KCHS. These were normally in the basilica here in Washington. inevitable the hierarchs transformed this day of remembrance into a mutual admiration event in which the emphasis was on chaplains rather than on dead grunts or tankers. The chaplains themselves generally do not act like that. See my essay "Dear Hearts Across the Seas." This mutual admiration was visible today in the discourse of the archbishop of Philadelphia in St mark's Chapel at the seminary there. His little speech was all about what splendid fellows his fellow bishops were. He sounded like a sheriff thanking the FBI, Fire Department, Dog Catcher, etc. at an open air press conference. Francis, did not thank the bishops. He talked about families. He talked about families. IMO the Church ought to retire most bishops and start over with a new crew. pl

Margaret Steinfels

A minor but instructive factoid about Cushing. He is said in histories of Vatican II to have paid for the installation of translating devices for all of the gazillion bishops. Apparently his Latin was not conversational and the Council was conducted in Latin. It's good for those bishops to understand one another!

Mark Gaughan

“The existence of a Prime Mover was established, with metaphysical certainty, by Aristotle.”
If energy and matter have always existed, as I think, then there is no need of Aristotle’s Prime Mover.
“I suspect you doubt that God cares about the fates of human beings?”
I don’t suspect that. As someone who doubts God’s existence, your question is pointless.

Mark Gaughan

I don't want to, and I won't, get into a debate over God's existence. It's just my way of thinking. You are very entitled to yours. I've said enough.

I think it will be a good idea for you to study some metaphysics.

Stephanie

Successor, I meant. Oops.

Babak Makkinejad

"Loving Kindness"?

You cannot serious?

Mongoose

The only metaphysical certainty that I'm aware of is that many, if not most, people believe in metaphysical certainties. And yes I've studied, thought about and meditated on metaphysics and the possibility of said certainties.

I was confirmed by the Good Cardinal Cushing and served as an Altar Boy to him at a funeral of a local parishioner. I can confirm his Latin was atrocious but then he was from South Boston where an Irish Brouge got you further in life. It is said that he was a big proponent of "Nostra-Aaetate" and had a hand in writing the fourth section. He also worked tirelessly in his ecumenical outreach. Loud and out-spoken he was but remains today the most revered Cardinal of Boston as we also have had the most scorned one. Little known was that his sister Dollly married Richard Pearlstein where the Cardinal joined their table to celebrate the Jewish Holidays.

The visit of Francesco has left feelings of warmth that are hard to describe to me, to you and to all of us but they are special. Hopefully as time moves forward we will see things occur that make us look back on his visit with a knowing smile.

Jose

Liberals love him, because he has abandon the principles of the church and taken their side.

BostonB

Agreed. I told my wife how ironic it was that Francis was probably the only bishop in that group of bishops at the Mass in Philly who didn't want to be Pope.

turcopolier

Jose

Ok Tell me which principles of the Church he has abandoned. Tell me. pl

Margaret Steinfels

Good to have history books confirmed by real experience. Yes, Francis; pretty amazing the feelings and thoughts he has generated.

Mark Gaughan

The chant is beautiful, is it not?

Maverick US politicians who refuse to pledge fealty to certain special interests have a habit of getting shot.

Trump is being advised by Roger Stone, who wrote a good book on the JFK assassination, so I am sure he takes the necessary precautions. A brave man is Mr Trump, it would be act of idiocy, not bravery, to forsake one's own personal security.

Mark Gaughan

Having this back and forth with you Babak was not my intention. The point I was trying to make was that even I, as a non-believer, am attracted to this Pope’s words and actions. I think he’s good for the world. That’s all.
I was really hoping that you all would read Ilyin’s essay on Power and Death and discuss it. I’m interested in what you have to say about it, and how it pertains to our Presidential candidates. I value this committee’s correspondence.

Richard Sale

I don't believe that the Pope abandoned his principles. He is trying to enact them before the public mind.

Pope Francis embodies the doctrine that'God is Love."

Richard Sale

Babak Makkinejad

Not to me.

Babak Makkinejad

I have read it and while I am not unsympathetic to some of the author's argument, I have to disagree with the overall paradigm relating the "People/nation", the state, and its leadership.

There are too many concepts that are used in this short essay which are subject to deep criticism in the way he has used them; take "Noble" & "Weak".

And such concepts as "Cynic" and "Law" are absent.

This must be contrasted with the English Constitution, which seems to have been working better than any other constitutional order.
