What strikes me about the ancient Greeks was their literary output more than anything else: poetry, drama, historiography, logic, rhetoric, grammar and lastly philosophy.

Only the Romans seem to have built on that ancient Greek Tradition - there are no texts extant from the Iranian plateau that could be considered the continuation of that tradition. In fact, there is no analogous corpus of texts from the Iranian plateau at all.

It is almost as though a wall had been erected somewhere East of Tigris river where literacy ended and illiteracy began - for millennia.

[The late Sassanid period had at most 10 texts of importance - including Zende Avesta - the most important of which was Khudainamak that served as the basis of Ferdowsi's Shahnameh.]
