That was a depressing read, but thanks for sharing it nonetheless.

I can see why some in the New Yorker declined to publish.
It provides a lot of deep information and makes it difficult to form a naive American consensus as to the characteristic of the Iraqi government.

Thanks P.L.! It would be of interest to learn why the NEW YORKER did not publish!

A Cheney/Libby phone call?

The New Yorker has "come a long way" in the last 10'ish years. They have skewed younger and richer(if the richer part is possible). It has not been a good transformation, and the Sy Hersch pieces that made me subscribe in the early days of the Iraq war are mostly gone. Anything to cause discomfort is entirely gone.

I think they just decided all on their own not to trouble their readers with thought.

Shouts and Murmurs is still funny though.

"I do not want to hear your opinion - it makes me uncomfortable" is a normal reaction.

A fascinating, in depth account of the negotiations discussed in the last few paragraphs of the post can be found in , by Susan Lindauer. The author is literally the horse's mouth because she was recruited as a CIA asset to be the go-between connecting the diplomats at the Iraqi UN mission in New York and the agents through whom the parleys were being conducted. She had gotten to know several of the diplomats through her activism protesting the effects of the embargo on Iraqi women and children. When, after the coalition forces went over the berm from Kuwait in March, 2003, she tried to blow the whistle on the bad faith of the Bush 43 administration's conduct of those negotiations, she was stomped on with golf shoes under the auspices of the Patriot Act. The fact that she was Andy Card's cousin didn't help her at all. If it weren't for the assistance of a few friends and most importantly another close relative who was an experienced and well-connected attorney she'd probably have been disappeared into a padded cell in a Thorazine haze until her death.

Agreed.

His family settled in Jordan and want him buried there.

Apropos Sy Hersh, significant that he ran his latest Bin Laden piece in the London Review of Books. Sotto-vocce-ish remarks I read were to the effect that the David Remnick who published the Obama panegyric "The Bridge" didn't really want to have anything to do with it.
Remnick, anyway, a fairly horrific Russia hack back in the day, and under him the New Yorker now publishing stuff like George Packer wishing for new wars to cure his ennui, http://crookedtimber.org/2015/04/26/when-george-packer-gets-bored-i-get-scared-it-means-hes-in-the-mood-for-war/

Obviously my attempt to emphasize the title with pointy brackets didn't work. The title is:
Extreme Prejudice: The Terrifying Story of the Patriot Act and the Cover Ups of 9/11 and Iraq
