"Sergeant Jay Cook of the New York State Police was on patrol alone when he spotted Sweat on a road on Sunday afternoon. The fugitive took off running and the officer shot him twice in the torso, police said.
Photographs surfaced on the Internet of the arrest of Sweat, who was unarmed and appeared bloody and slumped over as law enforcement officers tended to him." Reuters
--------------
Sergeant Jay Cook, who shot this man in line of duty is being lauded as a hero for shooting Sweat twice in the torso as Sweat ran away from him.
I would describe Cook as having done his duty, but, a "hero?"
Former policeman Slager is under indictment for murder in South Carolina for having shot an unarmed man as the victim ran from him. What is the difference in the deed?
I must ask if the public praise in the Borg would be there if Sweat had been Black?
And why is it that this prisoner with two torso wounds was photographed propped up, evidently for the camera? pl

A couple of boxes of shotgun shells in a locked container. Not stolen. This is not unusual in a very rural setting. In NY the runners got both weapons and ammo in the same way. pl

I didn't say you were a "city person." That is your straw man. Alexandria has 130,000 people at present. Albany has 97,000. Alexandria is not just a bed room community for Washington. There is a great deal of economic activity here that is related to the US government (lobbies, trade groups, etc.) What does Albany live on beside the state government? Most Washington people do not want to live here. The rich and powerful want to live in DC or Maryland. We get junior congressional staffers. My old place in the country was 1oo miles from Alexandria. Why are you so aggressive? Are you an "effete gun controller?" pl

It may well be that the burglar was some kid from within a ten mile radius. Shenandoah County has 30,000 inhabitants, a very low unemployment rate and a stable population. There were 20,000 people at the time of the WBS. There is a lot of light industry along I-81, restaurant food prep, furniture, slick magazine printing, etc. There are also dairies, beef cattle often worked by families who have been on the land since they came from Germany in the 18th century. There really were not a lot of poor people. These are Jefferson's yeomen. It is not the kind of place where you would expect to face your own gun and there was a trigger lock. the burglar carefully cut open a screen, opened the window without breaking the lock, removed the shotgun, and carefully closed the window behind him. sounds like my handyman who said he was a reformed "inebriate" and not taken too seriously by others in the area. pl

Like a lot of people down here I am very tired of being addressed as a cross between a moral reprobate and an intellectually challenged product of inbreeding. Perhaps I am a little over sensitive about it. In any event I DO NOT support "titling" guns although I do think that running federal and state background checks may be inevitable. We have very good background checks in Virginia, in fact, were the first in the country to have them. pl
