Richard! Thanks as always for your post and history. A number of BLACSTONE RANGER CHIEFS went through Basic Training in my Company at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri in fall 1967! They were very able men if largely lacking in formal education.
They respected me and I respected them.

Where they drafted or did they join?
If they were all leaders did they sign-up to learn
weapons and tactics to use on their eventual
return to civilian life? Possibly to follow
The lead of Frank Lucas of American gangster fame.

Steve G.! All were drated by the same Jude in S. Chicago trying to calm streets in summer 67! None were volunteers. All got orders to TIGERLAND, Ft. Polk for Infantry AIT. And all the PROJECT 100,000. The College-Ops like myself went to various OCS prep AIT. Me to Ft. Sill where I was trained to be a Firing Battery Specialist. Reported to Artillery OCS January 1968! Completed July 1968. Eight [8] of my OCS class including me sent to FRG. The others RVN sooner or later. I believe 7 killed in action. Two when firing batteries overrun. Several decorated.

Thanks. Have to give them credit for
showing up and doing the right thing.
Too bad about the KIAs. My brother
in law was from Chicago and called them
one fierce group. You did not wander
Into there turf.
