The Twisted Genius

That's one hell of a sustained DDOS attack. TechCrunch guesses that this was an attack aimed to extort a ransom from TypePad. Seems to be a lot of that going around. Another site says it was an attack on the spam fighting company Blue Security that followed its web presence to TypePad. That's a lot of collateral damage.

I wish NSA and CYBERCOM would spend some time and effort on actually defending. They could do a lot in conjunction with NANOG and the FBI. I guess defense is just not sexy enough.

Well DDS is also serving to remove some critical thinking voices from the web at a key time, though it may just be coincidental.

TTG, Col. Lang;
Great to see the site again. I was worried that SST had gone. Moon-of-Alabama is still down. Saker's blog had the lowest down-time. Someone posted a link there: http://dirtyglasses.typepad.com/ where one can access Sunday's last post for MoA. I do hope that SST will also have a place where we can check in case of such problems.

Maybe the US authorities can stop monitoring everyone's communications for a bit and deal with these extortionists. But, maybe they do not want to. At first I thought that the folks who do not appreciate SST had taken it down.

This appears to have been simple criminal behavior od the extortionist variety and probably originated overseas. You can always write me to ask about status. pl

I just read a book about the criminals, mostly in St Petersburg and similar locales, who do just this type of extortion. Hoping the government will protect us is futile. It appears they now utilize the very same technologies and have decided that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Protecting us would eliminate too much low hanging fruit.

Not only Russia, Ukraine is also in that business - last month their target was NATO:
