I agree, "Calm down on gun control".

There have been several (dozen?) posts in the last couple threads on this issue here which were not remotely "calm", many (most?) of them pro-gun & anti-control.

For decades, the NRA (and/or gun manufacturers Lobbying groups?) have nurtured a hysterical approach to this issue ("...from my cold, dead hands" was a great phrase, but not a calming one). It worked: the Democrats had given up on gun control, cowed into submission, as they were on so many other issues.

Frankly, I find it much easier to understand people reacting emotionally to the murder of 20 1st-graders than to imagined threats of "The Government" confiscating guns.

THe NRA has had the sense to lay low for a few days. It will be interesting to see if they return to the public arena with calm, constructive proposals.

Great, meanwhile meetings by Attorney General Eric Holder, VP Biden or any other cabinet member to arrest executives at money laundering banks - zero.

Remember Bloomberg crushing Occupy Wall Street? Not to worry, the authorities will keep us safe, just like they did then.Rights? Well, what's the first amendment right to peaceably assemble when protesters are making life uncomfortable for folks in the financial district - and the Billionaire Mayor.

At least the Brits finally arrested someone for libor rate fixing - we only bailed them out:

Mr Morgan has also have had his problems regarding Murdoch's illegal intelligence gathering operation vis a vis the cell phones . He most certainly is a carpet bagger.

Media grief is a cloak. When the Trayvon Martin incident happened the media was incensed in their vengeful intent and Trayvon was falsified into a small child, and George Zimmerman was falsified into a white murderer who selected his targets by how black and harmless they looked. Many were influenced by the intensity of media grief and if at that time a black person under such spell of hatred had decided to seek revenge on a class full of white children, then justice well served would be there as a murmur behind the new display of media grief and many would notice it. A little less loud and explicit than when Omar Shariff Thornton killed his coworkers, but it would be there all the same. In those days Media grief was hiding the hatred the paymasters have for white people and those with eyes to see saw behind the mask.

Today, hiding behind media grief lies the desire of those who control it to turn americans into gazans. And if with one end of their tongues they speak about disarming americans, with the other end they speak among themselves about exceptions to be made for their tribe when the laws are written and about the Homeland Security grants they shall be paid for protection from the dangers of uncontrolled weapon black markets and illegal guns in the hands of whoever wherever.

Moore's post modernism blinds him to the elephant in the room - that America has a lot more minorities than the European countries he bandies about.

But hey he's enconsed in the mountains in California surrounded by armed guards, why the hell should he care about those not in the ivory tower.

The MSM's 24/7 megaphone soundblasting of the entire media-captured public with unrelieved firehose soakdown words and images about this to the time pre-empting exclusion of much else might have another parallel goal besides just bulldozing the citizens to accept a no-guns-allowed society. There might be other damaging agenda items being snuck through government in the shadows of media silence about those items.

The blog Naked Capitalism has just run a post about such an agenda item . . . the degradation through privatisation of veterans' health care as currently provided through the VA system. The blogpost is titled:
Stealth Target of Defense Spending Cuts: America's
Highly Effective Socialized Medicine Provider, the
VA System, and Military Benefits Generally
The title speaks for itself, and the text of the post speaks to the title. The Obama Administration and its supporters in Congress hope to sneak this as well as other things into law in the artificially manufactured moral-panic atmosphere of the so-called "fiscal cliff". And the sudden devotion of total attention to gun issues will leave even less attention free to be paid to this plan. Here is the link.

This is why dumb the yankees are rude. New York has among the harshest gun control laws. Try being a New York asshole in Texas. You will get your ass shot off.

"HARROLD, Texas (AP) — In the tiny Texas town of Harrold, children and their parents don't give much thought to safety at the community's lone school — mostly because some of the teachers are carrying concealed weapons.

The nearest sheriff's office is 30 minutes away, and people tend to know — and trust — one another. So the school board voted to let teachers bring guns to school.

"We don't have money for a security guard, but this is a better solution," Superintendent David Thweatt said. "A shooter could take out a guard or officer with a visible, holstered weapon, but our teachers have master's degrees, are older and have had extensive training. And their guns are hidden. We can protect our children."....

You'll feel better in the spring when there is light more than a few hours a day and you can go outside without a parka. New Brunswick was founded by Tories escaping New England. They might be reluctant. We will welcome you back. pl

NancyK

Have you ever been to England? I believe they have a higher percentage of minorities than we do.

NancyK

I agree with you completely. It is always those with the least to fear that are the most fearful.

jonst

Oh, you struck a bulls eye with the lack of light comment....killing me. But no traffic jams....an few New York assholes here (yes, growing up in NYC...you get your share), and most of all, most of all, no, or few, anyway, loud mouth talk talking, little reading, blowhard, Jerry Jones type Texans up here.

blowback

Of course, how stupid of me not to realize that the News International phone hacking scandal was solely due to our government taking away any right to bear arms which we've never really had.

We should FOCUS the debate on GUNS. “The Polluter pays” as the saying goes. At the end of the day, when I choose to drive, I have to buy INSURANCE. Part of the premium goes to cover the cost of uninsured people who cause accidents. Same principle is valid for gun owners, who should be obliged to obtain a license and pay for the collective damage caused by their sport.

I was engaged to a girl from Newcastle for a time, so yes.

The UK is 85% white, but the overwhelming cultural marxist bent of the BBC makes sure blacks are featured overwhelmingly in every show there is bearing no resemblance to how they are in real life.

Much like in America, where homosexuals are around 3% of the population, but every piece of media has a quirky gay friend who bears no resemblance to the degenerency that is 'gay culture'.

Tyler

It'd be great if Piers mentioned that gun violence has gone up more since they banned guns than before. Or that in the UK they throw you in jail for 'racist' tweets or defending yourself in your own home from burglars.

Off duty deputy stops would be shooter at a premier of "The Hobbit".

optimax,

Very interesting. Moore is on to something.

In terms of violent crime research, cocaine abuse/addiction leads to reduced levels of serotonin in the brain. This, in turn, can and does lead to increased levels of violent behavior, experts say.

Some years ago, I was briefed by a team of forensic psychiatrists researching violent behavior under government contract. One specific area covered was the cocaine issue. The presentation included brain scans of patients so afflicted and a control of normal brain scans. Through interpretation using coloration and other diagnostic techniques of the scans the relationship of cocaine abuse to reduced serotonin levels could be analyzed. Even to my inexpert eye, when explained to me the scans of the afflicted violent offenders very clearly showed differences measuring serotonin levels to be at lower levels than the normal control brain scans.

Fred

No, that's just an example of the kind of government men like Murdoch would be happy to give America. Our supreme court would be happy to oblige since they believe money is speech and corporations people.

Fred

Last I heard he lived near Traverse City Michigan. He's actually done a great deal of good in town, but apparently is a bit clueless about the rest of the folks outside TC since hunting is a big part of the culture in Northern Michigan.

Al Spafford

How would requiring insurance coverage have any constitutional infringement? When purchasing a gun, one often pays taxes. Seems similar in effect.
