"Ethnic Jews currently living in the United States overwhelmingly support and often lobby (albeit not as aggressively as Lockheed Martin) for American aid to Israel, not because the Jewish state genuinely needs the money but because an economic and political connection between the government they live under and the government of their people’s country allows them to feel a greater sense of personal security in a foreign land. The notion of Israel serving as a United States fortress in the Middle East allows America’s Jewish community to believe it can avoid ever having to confront questions of dual-loyalty." Adam Horowitz quoting a settler.

These American Jewish soldiers and their chaplain don't seem to realise that they are living in a "foreign land." The "divorce" can't come soon enough. pl
Mondoweiss, that site where readers waited ages for an "Elian Gonzales moment" for the izzy lobby but instead got Donald duck inspired censorship cast upon them. Now the readers wait for a divorce between izzy and american jews, but all they are getting is a new kind of censorship where any discussion involving jewish culture and jewish involvement in the many past horror they so willingly produced is forbidden. While the Mondoweiss staff wants to keep the focus on the palestinian oppression, they forget that their readers, especially american ones, are also under oppression and they should be allowed to express their views. The very existence of Mondoweiss owes far more to american ideals of free speach than to inexistent judaic views of open dialogue.

I have totally given up trying to understand the Jewish community or Israelis. They are constantly crying anti semitism, declaring anti semitism is a inherent disease in gentiles which must always be guarded against and demanding nothing negative be said about Israel and the Jewish lobby groups or there will be another holocaust.
AND YET...in the US we have watched every old canard about the Jews come to life...the 'nation within a nation", "loyalty only to the tribe', etc.,etc.. It is mind boggling their leadership is acting out everything for which the Jews have been condemned for centuries. They should change their slogan from Never Again to Never Learn.

Re. Americans in the IDF. It seems that there is only one reasonable response to this: enforce the laws that are applicable. Do so quickly and dispassionately as the evidence appears.

Tikun Olam has a wonderful image on site that captures it perfectly:

With a self-image like that they'll not only never feel safe anywhere, they won't ever feel safe even in Israel despite being the only nuclear power in the Middle East - because the gentiles will always be out there to get them.
re "anti semitism is a inherent disease in gentiles"
Needless to say, that is of course entirely accurate, but I insist that Goldhagen is right in "Hitler's Willing Executioners" and that only we Germans have the eliminatory kind in our blood.
You other gentiles are all amateurs. I have always wondered where that occasional morningly bloodthirst comes from. It's my suppressed anti-Semitism. If not for Goldhagen's astute observations I would have never known.
And then there is the Catholic church, which is almost worse than us, but only almost. As a remedy for Catholic anti-judaism Goldhagen in "A Moral Reckoning" has modestly proposed that the Bible be rewritten in 400 places.
I can't wait for his Book on Islamic anti-Semitism and his remedies for the Koran. That'll be exciting.

I suppose the St. Matthew Gospel would be high on his list for revision. pl

I was wondering what kind of quid pro quo was involved in the sudden laryngitis of the zionists. Thus on Election Day:
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel has announced plans to press ahead with construction of 1,213 homes on annexed West Bank land, defying international opposition to its settlement policies.
The Israel Land Administration on Monday published notices inviting bids from contractors to build on plots in Ramot and Pisgat Zeev, urban settlements that Israel has declared part of Jerusalem.
The plans call for the building of 607 new homes in Pisgat Zeev and 606 in Ramot. Tens of thousands of Israelis already live in the two areas.
Beat the donkey: We are all settlers now.

It seems necessary to restate the point that attitudes among American Jews on the several issues being discussed here is anything but monolithic. The most dangerous thing that can happen is to allow the militants in Israel and de facto Zionist organizations in the US to frame and to dominate the public discourse. Most American Jews want a reasonably just settlement in Palestine; most certainly do not believe all gentiles are anti-semitic and do not relate to gentiles on that basis. This last was never the case and is a gross caricature today.
I think the tack for non-Jews to take is to address these matters and Jews themselves with the presumption of thse two notable truths guiding what is said and how it is said. This permits candor which is imperative, and a candor that encourages non-Zionist Jews to express what's in their hearts uninhibited by re awakened anxiety that gentiles are picking on them

mbrenner,
I have to disagree in part. For 11 years during my observations of Israel and the US-Israel entanglement I have taken the tack that it is a minority of Jews and monied US zionist who actively subvert US foreign policy on Israel to Israel's benefit and America's detriment. I have now changed my opinion on that.
I can tell you, without lengthy elaborating, that in my very, very, very wide ranging experience in discussion with zionist, liberal zionist and anti zionst Jews, and in my experience of having been an early supporter of various Jewish I/P peace organizations ..that the Jewish community not only will they not accept any legitimate arguments or positions contrary to 'their wishes' re Israel from non Jewish Americans, they don't want to hear them, period. And even the most liberal respond to them 99% of the time with the implication that anti Israel is born of anti semitism.
It is the US Jewish community itself that 'allows' the debate on Israel to be dictated by Israeli and US zionist. I can no longer accept the illogic that thousands of Israel centric Jewish organizations and publications thruout the US exist without majority support or at least a large 'market' that demands US support of Israel regardless of what Israel does or what the effect on the Us is.
The bottom line is this....after 65 years of catering to, trillions of dollars spent on, numerous privileges extended to, a blanket immunity from all responsibility for their own actions and attitudes given.....the 'trauma' and 'nightmares" of the Jews is not the world's responsibility and they cannot continue to 'inflict' their nightmares on the world. It is not up to us to coddle them out of their irrational fears any longer. And the more their 'sensitivities' have been coddled, the worse they have become in their demands on the world.
The Jewish community as a whole needs to realize that neither the world, nor the US revolves around them or their Jewish state as some special protected species and entity that all others must sacrifice their own interest and welfare for.
If they cannot and will not adjust to that real world reality then whatever consquences result are their responsibility, no one elses.

My experience, and that of some others (gentiles) whom I know, has been different. Much de[ends on contect and formulation of issues.

I'm with mbrenner on this. I like to put it this way (and yes, I'm a WASP, so I'm allowed to play with that stereotype): some of my best freinds are Jewish Americans; others are American Jews.
As usual, the picture Col Lang put at the top of the thread is worth at least one kilo-word.

I am half WASP and half French-Canadian (les premiers). I deeply resent Zionist assumptions that Jewish Americans are in exile. My father, then a Warrant officer) met my mother at dinner in the quarters wf one of his dearest friends, a master sergeant Leonard Zager. Sergeant Zager was married to a French Canadian girl who was my mother's friend. My father was a confirmed batchelor, but that night changed his life and he always credited Zager who had served with him in the Phillipine Constabulary/ pl

LOL..some of my friends are Jewish also...that does not however, change the facts or realities in the problem of US support for Israel.
