Had a chance to see Lincoln this evening at the movies. I thought it was excellent. Have you seen it and if so what was you impression?

I have not, but will. Spielberg does good work. From the trailers this looks to me to be a more sophisticated continuation of the narrative of lincolnolatry. pl

It focuses namely on the machinations required for the passage of the 13th amendment through the House of Representatives in early 1865 and concurrent peace talk negotiations with the South. It isn't a dewy-eyed assessment of Lincoln; far deeper.

Spielberg does good work the way Leni Riefenstahl did good work - hence the term Spielbergian bathos.

"peace talk negotiations with the South" A joke, he had no conditions for a settlement except surrender. pl

The movie addresses the ambiguities of the peace talks and the need for the 13th amendment to supplant executive orders in war time before the war drew to a conclusion. Neither the 13th or the peace talks such as they were can be viewed in isolation.

"Neither the 13th or the peace talks such as they were can be viewed in isolation." a truism. pl

I look forward to reviewing an expanded dialogue if you open an official thread on the topic.

You must be new here. There have been many discussions here on the WBS/CW. They inevitably lead to gross hostility still representative of Northern feeling towards the South. Southerners generally don't care about Yankees as such except to wish to be able to ignore them. So, if you are looking for a fight about the war, its causes and the sanctity of the Northern cause, look elsewhere. pl

Nope I've been posting on your site for years.
FWIW my families were on both sides, also I grew up in the south and currently live in the north.
Given your Civil War books I thought the Lincoln movie would be of interest.

The film is of interest. I just can't handle any more C. Matthews type hatred of the South and don't want any more of that on SST. He did it again tonight. pl
