"My wife, who is an ambitious reader, recently set out to read Henry James two-volume work, The Portrait of a Lady. Feeling she should enjoy some solidarity, I began to read it as well. I have read it three times, but long ago, and I truly believe that you never read the same book since all of evolve mentally all the time. Things which were mediocre at the beginning become startling vivid over time. So I set out." Richard Sale
Personally IMO Edith Wharton [her 150 birthday this year] is a better writer and story teller than James. Still he deserves his reputation although during their lives Edith outsold Henry by far as a popular author and winner as the first female to gain a Pulitzer for a novel--The AGE of INNOCENCE. The Custom of the Country now being filmed and my favorite of Ms. Wharton.
She was also the favorite author of my Welsh Grandmother Edith Owen AND OF course Edith Wharton's maiden name was JONES! Another fine Welsh name.
