I would like to thank Wayne State University for their spineless insult to Helen Thomas. It has stiffened my resolve to continue here so long as I can. pl

Well, by such action, Wayne university proves that she is right"Zionists control U.S. foreign policy and other institutions"

Colonel,
It is like former Israeli MK Member Shulmaet Aloni said -- Israel/its supporters use the Antisemitism card against any/all U.S. criticisms of Israel and its government/citizens barbaric behavior towards others, and for European criticisms, Israel and its supporters use the Holocaust card to muffle all European criticisms.
Helen Thomas IMO is one beautiful lady with something that is lacking today -- those with backbone about them. The truth cannot be muffled.
Helen's latest:

"DETROIT | Helen Thomas said Thursday that she stands by her comments about Israel she made earlier this year that led to her resignation as a national columnist. And she went further, saying that Zionists control U.S. foreign policy and other institutions. The local Jewish community condemned her remarks.

Well, what a bunch of weasels at Wayne State and so called "diversity".
I hope you (Pat) and Helen live long lives to keep speaking out.

Helen Thomas has always been one of my heroes (& it's a pretty short list Helen's on, believe me). She remains as such.

Colonel,
Not all the time I agree with everything you or the distinguished commenters say - but you do serve this country and I thank you for that. It may be that your blog and the comments are being looked at somewhere, but the "lookers" must be wondering deep down in their hearts, how long can those good times can last...Nothing is forever and that is good.

Trog bait. Don't take it. The fuckers are chumming. The Anti-Defamation League NEEDS antisemitism, so incites it.
That CNN article seems to have been edited. Don't remember the following explanatory paragraphs when I read that earlier.

Thank you for your return. I would have come back forlornly for weeks, like a bird to the emptied feeder at the cottage, pining for the good stuff.
This is the good Prof Boyle's thesis at work.
At least things have reached a point where the issue itself can't really be suppressed, even if informed rational discussion or remediation are distant.
Gibberish is being called out, people of intelligence and achievement are speaking out regardless, emerging with their opinions, principles, and apparently, fingers, toes and faculties intact, rather than lapsing into apolgetic defensive posture.
No doubt with stiffened resolve.
This is heartening progress.
Thanks again. I don't think much about heroes, but I think you and Juan Cole do heroic work your country needs. And we appreciate.

Helen Thomas could have worded her views more carefully, however the issue of AIPAC's status and apparent activities in the interest of a foreign entity and the apparent unwillingness of our congressional, judicial (supporting monied interests), defense and security related, and mainstream media leadership (what happened to democratic dialogue) to address this issue must have weighed heavily in the wake of her outburst. We clearly need to treat our relationship with Israel more openly and rationally or it will prove to be another important irritation in our national achilles heel, which is already festering from our frightening economic downturn which, in turn, has
been significantly aggravated by our totally misguided involvement in Iraq followed by our well-intended, but futile wanderings Afghanistan. Yes! If we don't wake up very soon, it will be just a matter of time before
this precious nation ceases to stand out as the beacon of Democracy.

A 90 year old woman for god's sake. You want to say to them, 'at long last sir, have you no decency?'. Cruel and petty bastards. Sorta like the Bourbon's, the neocons, and their toadies, learn nothing and forget nothing

I hope this site stays around as long it can. I learn something new here every I time I visit - which is now becoming a semi-addiction. TheRealNews.com had a recent interview with Ms. Thomas which may be of interest:

Col Lang,
It is good that you have reconsidered. Your voice is needed by your country in this difficult time. Your blog stands out as a beacon of light and hope, not only for your own countrymen but also for us others who realize how much the rest of the world depends on which way the US goes.

Charles I cites signs of progress in that Americans of intelligence and authority are speaking out
about Israel's hold on our foreign policy. I'm not as sanguine. Far too many politicians, academics, financiers, members of the media, scientists, and religous leaders are fearful of the power of AIPAC or dependent on its money and remain silent. Will this ever change? Or
will these same American leaders blindly support an attack on Persia?

Dear Col Lang -
Please keep your blog going. If moderating the comments is too time-consuming, sacrifice them. But you bring a valuable and respected point of view from which I always learn something - especially when I do not agree with you!

Its a start. Another person will write a letter to an editor, or as I'm often pleading, your pols.
And work your friends and colleagues over.
Got apathetic non voting friends? I can convince those of mine in that class to act/vote write on the basis of self interest/i leave them alone.
Its a start.
Please help.

All that is required for evil to succeed is that good men remain silent. Welcome back. It obviously ain't about the money. Too bad those cowed by AIPAC's crowd haven't figured either of these facts out.

Like Stanley Henning above, I think Helen Thomas could have -- and should have -- been more careful in expressing her views.
She not only did a disservice to herself by not making it crystal clear that she was talking about Zionists, not all Jewish people, she also failed to point out a critical distinction to many Americans who assume Zionist = Jewish. She must have known that saying what she did -- in the way she did -- would only cause people to condemn her and tune her message out.
So she missed a second chance this year to make a point that's important for people to hear and understand. I just don't understand why she would do that.

“She not only did a disservice to herself by not making it crystal clear that she was talking about Zionists, not all Jewish people, she also failed to”
I understand, technically, there is a difference between Zionism and the Jewish people in general. However, so long as the People of Jewish faith are willing to continue their un-questionable support of Israel and not stand up against her atrocities, is there a difference?
It is ironic, atleast some stand up individuals, such as Mick Davis, chairman of the pre-eminent Anglo-Israel charity, are beginning to recognize the fallacy of Israeli policies and the continued silence of her supporters.
