Some useful data:

"Saban is not given to modest ambitions. Sixty-five years old, with a broad, dynamic countenance and slicked-down wavy black hair, he is known in Los Angeles as the man who brought the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from Japan to America; the chairman and part owner of Univision, the nation’s leading Spanish-language media company; a staunch supporter of Israel (he has dual citizenship); and one of the largest individual donors to the Democratic Party."...

Great data mining CK..The candour of the Newyorker article is astouding, notably the last para.

“Let me give you an example of this access, and why it’s completely O.K.,” Saban responded. “I hosted the Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, in my home. I was informed that he refused to sign a letter to Obama, which was signed by most of the senators, supporting Israel, before the speech in Cairo. . . . I got the message on Saturday and he was at my house on Sunday. I asked him, ‘Why didn’t you sign?’

“So he said, ‘Because I don’t sign other people’s initiatives,’ as the leader, as head of the Democratic Party.

“I said, ‘So send a letter of your own.’ ” And, Saban added, smiling, and with hesitation, as though he did not like to boast, “He did.”

He continued, “I won’t say that nobody abuses it. But I’ve been active in American politics for over fifteen years, and I’ve never abused it. No one ever wrote that I abused it. Everything is fine. We can look for something,” he added, laughing. “But we won’t find a thing.”

...and he's only been active in politics for 15 years..

I sincerely hope your other 'politicians' have a better grasp of nationhood and international relations that this guy.

robman,

Thanks for the kind words.

1. I can recommend also the New York Magazine article on the politically active Wall Street mogul Bruce Kovner.
http://nymag.com/nymetro/news/people/features/12353/index5.html

Saban and Kovner, one could argue, represent elements of the "New Crowd" of very wealthy Jewish political influentials in the US. This New Crowd follows in the footsteps of the older established "Our Crowd" element of German Jewish banking families on Wall Street dating from the latter 19th century. The Our Crowd element was documented in Stephen Birmingham's classic Our Crowd, The Great Jewish Families of New York available from Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Our-Crowd-Jewish-Families-History/dp/0815604114#noop

2. One can debate the issue of just when the Jewish political element became dominant in the US over the former WASP ascendancy dating from colonial times.

This would relate, in part, to the Jewish-Gentile balance of forces on Wall Street. Such an analysis is complicated as some Gentiles partnered with Jewish financial interests and both had interrelationships with London and the City. For example, the Harriman family got their loans from Kuhn Loeb investment bank, Jacob Schiff's outfit fronting for the Rothschilds.

Roughly speaking one might venture a guess and say the balance shifted post WWII, although it had been shifting much earlier since the WWI era as the Woodrow Wilson presidency indicated.

3. The political reality in the US is that at least 3/4 of the US Senate and US House can be counted on by the "pro-Israel" Lobby. Analysis of voting patterns in Congress for "pro-Israel" legislation would indicate this and, of course, AIPAC's website can be monitored to assess its perception of its influence.

4. This political reality is not going to change. The US has moved into a new phase of multi-ethnic politics. The old WASP ascendancy is completely dead and is the subject of museums in New England and in Virginia (Colonial Williamsburg etc).

The shape of the multi-ethnic politics to come is anyone's guess at the moment. Some argue it will develop a bit like the old multi-ethnic Austrian Empire. The gentile "white" element will be a minority in demographic terms in two or three decades. Who knows as this is all very speculative, although some trends can be identified.

Anonymous,

I can suggest the exellent book by Kathleen Christison, Perceptions of Palestine. Their Influence on Middle East Policy (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2000).
