Question

"for vets? Does that include you or do you have some other interest in this?

In 1968 I read the trsnslated transcripts of the radio traffic between the Israeli strike leader and his base. He made it clear that this was the American Naval vessel that had been discussed in his pre-mission briefing and asked if he was still to attack the ship.

The answer was, yes.

Believe me, don't believe me.. It is nothing to me. pl

Colonel,

I picked up an interesting tidbit of info on the web today regarding a Major Hess-von Kruedener, late of Canada's Princess Pat Light Rifles, KIA El Khiam two days ago.

The CTV network received an e-mail from him dated july 18. He was the OIC of the UN det. Here is the link
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20060718/mideast_lebanon_UN_060716/20060718/

In the last paragraph he states
"What I can tell you is this: we have on a daily basis had numerous occasions where our position has come under direct or indirect fire from both artillery and aerial bombing. The closest artillery has landed within 2 meters of our position and the closest 1000 lb aerial bomb has landed 100 meters from our patrol base. This has not been deliberate targeting, but has rather been due to tactical necessity.

I thank you for the opportunity to provide you with some information from the front lines here in south Lebanon."

Assuming that his Pos had a wall for a perimeter with himself and his crew located in the four story building, it would seem that he was overrun by the Hizbz who wanted shelter from the Arty and airstrike storm.

A picture shown on the web purporting to be the blast of the UN post shows a Daisy Cutter level explosion. Maybe it was a "target rich environment" in more than one sense (of the two birds with one stone variety). I will follow this story closely and hope some more emerges.

What better way to win over the UN. Bracketing a well marked known UN observation post with shells for an hour or two while the unarmed observers beg for mercy and then delivering the coup de grace with a laser guided bomb. It’s the preliminary teasing of the pleading victims that really sets this apart.

They then berate Annan for publicly doubting their innocence; the UN meekly turns the other cheek. Next week DC and London will demand a resolution from the UN for international force to rescue the IDF from being trapped into certain defeat in Lebanon.

There is a word for this: chutzpah. This is a nation that has learned to expect generous rewards rather than punishment for acts like the sinking of the Liberty.

hk

ali,

Israelis NEVER succeeded in sinking the Liberty--despite sustained attacks from air and sea, the crew of the Liberty kept the ship afloat the entire time through heroic efforts.

ali

True. As I recall they did strafe the survivors rather diligently.

Question

Was just puzzled and confused by the debate and the back and forth. Did not mean to question you or your experience. Not at all - please forgive if that was the impression. It's just hard to know what is right when reading about things in school and later on that are still contested. Thanks. Learn much from you blog. Hope there was no misunderstanding.

Didn't the late, great Leo Rosten (in "The Joys of Yiddish") define chutzpah as unmitigated insolence, audacity, gall, effrontery?

I seem to remember that "a chutzpahnik may be defined as the man who shouts 'Help! Help!' while he is beating you up".
