I do disagree with the reviewer regarding a triumph of Soviet spirit..it is a triumph of the Russian spirit and the power of culture. The orchestra members - like the other residents were dying of starvation during the composition. even though Russians were dying of starvation they were still going to the symphony - to feed their souls. And Shostakovich was definitely perceived as a dissident by Stalin.
