A little send off music for the Labor Day weekend:
Fanfare For The Common Man- Aaron Copland
If you've never read Studs Terkel's Working, maybe this is the weekend to pick it up. If you have already read it, perhaps a good weekend for some re-reading...
Wishing all TA/SST posters, readers, & commenters a pleasant Labor Day holiday spent with family & friends.
-Maureen Lang

I read "Working" about 30 years ago out loud to my mother as we were driving to Denver. It's a good book and Studs was a treasure.

He was indeed, Jackie. May I recommend the Chicago History Museum site for their "Conversations with America" series on Terkel's life & work:

Great memory to share in the TA comments about reading aloud on your car trip, btw.

I think "Working" is a great classic. It is a documentation of a working class culture in which doing low paid but useful and self-sacrificing work was still honoured.
Just because no one has written about such values or cultures for thirty years does not mean that they do not still exist.
