And a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you and yours Col. Lang.

This would be what in my youth was referred to as a snappy little story. A good read too, as Bertie's uncle gets his comeuppance for shipping him off to the wilds of Rhodesia.

Merry Christmas and Happy 2012 to you.

Great Xmas reading, thanks for the link. May I ask what general part of the central California coast you are enjoying?

Maureen Lang

Georges,

I am not far from San Simeon & La Cuesta Encantada, one of your, Peter, & Sasha's favorite places to visit.

FYI to any reader interested: H.H. Munro's pen name 'Saki' is Farsi for 'cup-bearer' & is thought to be taken from either the ancient Persian poem The Rubayat of Omar Khayyam or possibly from the New World Saki monkey Pitheciidae, both being referred to in his acerbically witty & sometimes macabre stories.

Georges B.

Have you been on the evening Living History tour up at Hearst Castle? Sasha would like to go on it the next time we are in the area.

Georges B.,

I have not yet been on that particular tour & plan on doing so the next time it is offered in Spring 2012. Our new neighbors here have taken it & highly recommend it- the highlight for them was a cocktail party chat they had that evening in Hearst's study with "Winston Churchill."

Shirley Bolton

Thank you for this link, Maureen. Robert and I know very little about Saki or his writings. Would you recommend a biography from your bookshelf or other links?

Jonathan House

I have read each and every one of Saki's short stories so often that they are very familiar (I like his plays less) and his complete works are available for less than 20$ - e.g. at http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Saki-Classic-20th-Century-Penguin/dp/0141180781/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324383822&sr=8-1

He died in WWI - he had enlisted the day war was declared. He was killed by a sniper's bullet at about 3 am on November 13, 1916. His last words were, "Put that bloody cigarette out!"

I think I am closer to Saki's temper, than to that of this poem which I had not known. A new friend just sent me an email closing with this:

..."Meanwhile, here is an incredibly beautiful poem. A poem I'm sure many of us wish we wrote.

The New Song

W.S. Merwin

For some time I thought there was time
and that there would always be time
for what I had a mind to do
and what I could imagine
going back to and finding it
as I had found it the first time
but by this time I do not know
what I thought when I thought back then.

there is no time yet it grows less
there is the sound of rain at night
arriving unknown in the leaves
once without before or after
then I hear the thrush waking
at daybreak singing the new song.

[She adds:]
2012 could be a wonderful year. The numbers look good, from a purely visual standpoint. God knows what that means. I hope I get to see everyone very often, and that some of what happens this year is unexpected and amazing. Much love to everyone.
