Cold War Zoomie

Funny story. First I heard of this crazy landing scheme. What years were these? U2s were flying out of Mildenhall along with the SR-71s when I was at Chicksands from '86 to '88.

Charles I

Great little story, thanks very much. As much as the bravery, it calls to mind the sheer perverse design ingenuity - build a plane that flies so great for its purpose, it can't land without help, but the job gets done. Recalls the SR-71, which although it could land okay, massively leaked fuel until its structure reached speed and heated up enough to expand and seal up the tanks.

The Twisted Genius

Basilisk, great story. I wonder if that brave/crazy airman had to do this until he PCSed or for just so many missions before assuming less exhilarating duties. It reminds me of an incident on a rainy night in the Kahuku Training Area in Hawaii back in the 70s. I was sitting in the jump seat of an M-151 TOW jeep. We started down a steep dirt road under blackout conditions when we started sliding sideways down the road. I was fairly certain we would end up off a cliff or, if luck, wrapped around a tree. The driver, SP4 Cuevas just turned to face me and started laughing like he was calling death's bluff. We made it out unscathed, but I cannot remember a thing about how we managed to cheat death except for that laugh of SP4 Cuevas.

No offense, but if there's a facebook like button, it'll be much easier for me to share.
