After the last hockey match of the recent Stanley Cup finals, riots broke out in downtown Vancouver. In one of the police charges, a young woman was hit with a policeman’s shield and knocked down. Her boyfriend lay down besides her, trying to comfort the injured girl.
Someone took a picture.
A moment in time
When Time itself stood still
The world’s clamour died away
All Reality and Being
Reduced to a single point
You and I........locked
In this desperate embrace.

She is a native Vancouverite; an environmental engineer. Her boyfriend is a 29-year old Australian.
Like many young folks last week, they were neither expecting trouble nor prepared for it when it arrived. Those of us who remembered the shenanigans in '94 were not so shocked. Worse than the people, like this young couple, who were buffeted by the disorder were the those who got swept up in the mob mentality. Pictures of the guilty are circulating, many of whom are young and indulged. My favorite is the 17 year old championship water polo player, from a well-off family in the 'burbs. The picture of him lighting a rag stuffed in the gas tank of a police cruiser speaks a thousand words. He has everything to lose and nothing to gain. It is obvious he had no idea of how such a situation would test him. I wonder if his parents thought twice either.
I live in a neighboring municipality these days but I grew up in East Vancouver. This is a black eye for my city. Elsewhere in the world, under far more serious circumstances, we've seen how social media has facilitated civil disobedience. I'm hoping it will do the opposite here. Time will tell.

Amid the riot
When the whole world's gone insane
I will comfort you
(haiku song verse I wrote for the woman I love, inspired by this amazing & unforgettable image)
