A nice read after Songkran celebrations at a local Theravada monastery. I like the forest monk tradition, but then I listened to Alan Watts programs as a kid.

Somewhere I came across a claim that Siddhartha (Buddha #?) didn't want any statues made of him, but have been unable to find it again. I like the stories of when he got tired of people.

Dr. Brennan:

Not sure if these would be of interest to you. Easy enough to scroll if not.

[aside] Those immense Buddhist complexes in China are always constructed by "alien" "barbarian" dynasties. I wonder if they were not a softly softly symbolic boot on the neck of the Han people - analogous to the Norman castles and then cathedrals to the Anglo-Saxons in post-11th C. England.

Ever notice that as you get representations of the Buddha in bliss there are corresponding [?] batshit crazy lokapalas or other protector figures. This is not the realm of the sublime; this is the realm of duality. Also, ever notice that their ally guardians and destroyer demons are often roundeyes? Khmer, Tibet, China -- only the Japanese have indigenized theirs. Many appear to be apoplectic Welshmen. Here is one that looks JUST like Brian Blessed: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mharrsch/824251652/in/photostream/lightbox/ .

Oh, there is a typo in the first two image tags, Khmer s/b Mathura.

a thousand pardons, Dr. Brenner.
